Stakeholder Consultation on National Plan of Action for Conservation and Management of Sharks in India
India is set to adopt the National Plan of Action for Conservation and Management of Sharks (NPOA-Sharks) to improve shark conservation and management. The plan focuses on legal, administrative, research, and cooperation measures to sustain shark populations, crucial for over 200,000 people dependent on shark fisheries.
Announced at a Kochi meeting on February 19, 2024, the initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Fisheries, the Government of India, and other agencies. Ms. Neetu Kumari Prasad, Joint Secretary, and Dr. P Krishnan, Director of BOBP-IGO, emphasized the plan's role in sustainable fisheries and compliance with international regulations, marking a significant step in shark conservation efforts.
