The tunas, which contributed to the bycatch fishery in India, are being targeted in the last one decade. Tharuvaikulam, a fishing village in Thoothukudi District in the southern part of India, has specialised in tuna fishing by converting about 130 trawlers into gillnetters. Due to the presence of Sri Lankan landmass, the fishing operation is restricted to the grounds between Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari, a stretch of about 150 km. The key target species is the skipjack tuna. Considering the emergence of Thoothukudi District in tuna fishery, the seventh Scoping Consultation was held in Hotel GRT Regency, Thoothukudi on September 22, 2016. As is the case with the tuna fishery along the Indian coast, the price realised for tunas is less here too. The fishermen and traders suggested popularisation of tunas for domestic consumption by projecting the benefits of tuna as health food. The key benefits of the scoping consultations held in India so far include stakeholder identification, engagement, input and identification of issues of concern and opportunities in tuna fisheries. This information is critical to plan interventions in the tuna fishery for developing business model(s) under the OPP-BOB project.
