Andhra Pradesh, located on the southeast coast, records the maximum tuna landings in India. The uniqueness of Andhra Pradesh is that boats ranging from sail-propelled artisanal type to large mechanized boats with diverse gear fish for yellowfin, skipjack and neritic tunas. In spite of a vibrant fishery for tunas, there are several issues that need to be addressed. To improve the understanding on tuna fisheries in Andhra Pradesh and identify issues and opportunities, a Scoping Consultation was held in Hotel Daspalla, Visakhapatnam on 31 May 2016. 62 key stakeholders from across the supply chain namely, fishermen, fish traders, exporters, researchers, academicians, experts and development agencies participated in the Consultation. The Consultation emphasised on the need for ensuring sustainability of fisheries; better infrastructure facilities, particularly fish storage and improved transportation and market linkages; and the need for capacity building, knowledge management and establishing partnerships amongst stakeholders in the business. The Consultation also stressed upon demonstration of best practices across the supply chain and enhancing the capacity by learning from other countries in the region.
